STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Three Years as a Study Townsville Student Ambassador: Community, Growth, and the Tropical Life

Emmanuel from Ghana, has been involved with the Study Townsville Student Ambassador program for the past three years while he is undertaking a PhD in Health at James Cook University (JCU).

For the past three years, being a Study Townsville Student Ambassador has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life in this tropical city. I chose to study in Townsville because I wanted more than just a degree: I wanted a supportive community, hands-on experiences, and the chance to grow in a place that blends education with opportunities. Townsville offered exactly that.

One of the biggest highlights has been attending networking events across the city. These events connected me with industry partners, university staff, and other motivated students, all of which helped me build confidence and develop a clearer sense of my career goals. The practical skills I gained: professional communication, networking, and leadership are things I know will stay with me long after graduation.

Through Study Townsville, I also had the chance to volunteer with Townsville Enterprise, welcoming guests arriving on a cruise ship. It was a simple but meaningful experience: greeting visitors, answering questions, and showcasing the warmth of Townsville. Moments like these made me realise how much I had grown, not just academically, but personally.

A standout memory was our trip to Orpheus Island with the team. Exploring the island, learning about the environment, and spending the day with students from different backgrounds was unforgettable. We learned, laughed and shared our unique life experiences in a way that brought us even closer as a group.

I also work as a casual staff member with the Student Communications and Engagement team on campus: a role that has played a big part in my personal growth. Setting up student events, welcoming new students, and interacting with different members of the university community has strengthened my communication skills and boosted my confidence. This position has given me practical experience in teamwork, event coordination, and student interactions, and it has helped me feel even more connected to campus life and Townsville.

For future students, my best advice is simple: get involved! Join clubs, attend events, volunteer and ask questions. Townsville has more support and opportunities than you may expect—and yes, on a lighter note, the occasional freebies and student perks definitely make the experience fun too.

Townsville truly warmed up to me, and I’m proud to have played a part in welcoming other students to this beautiful tropical city.
