Townsville offers academic and recreational activities, making it a great place to both study and explore
Vijann from Cambodia is one of the 2024 Study Townsville Student Ambassadors, and is studying a Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery at @Axial Training and International College in Townsville. Vijann shares why he chose Townsville as his study destination and how his experiences here are adding value to his desired career path.
I chose to study in Townsville because of its reputation as a vibrant and welcoming place for international students. Many of my friends who have studied here shared positive experiences about the city’s environment, its educational opportunities, and its scenic beauty. Townsville offers academic and recreational activities, making it a great place to both study and explore. This combination of quality education and lifestyle opportunities made Townsville an ideal choice for me.
One of the most exciting aspects of living in Townsville has been participating in activities organised by Study Townsville for the student ambassador program. These events have not only enriched my experience but also helped me build connections with other international students from various colleges and universities.
Townsville’s thriving hospitality and tourism industry aligns perfectly with my career aspirations in culinary arts. The city offers numerous opportunities to gain hands-on experience in hotels and restaurants, which are central to my desired career path.
During my study period, I’ve undertaken a work placement as part of my course. This opportunity allowed me to gain practical experience in my field while connecting with professionals in the industry.
I chose to study culinary arts because of my passion for cooking and creating exceptional dining experiences. Recently, I searched for a suitable course in Toowoomba but discovered the program I wanted was only available in Brisbane. However, I preferred the less crowded, more relaxed environment in Townsville. I was thrilled to find a culinary school here that met my needs.
For future students, I recommend focusing on one task at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Start with the simpler task before tackling the more challenging one, as this approach saves time and builds confidence.
Building a social life in Townsville is easy by engaging in community events and connecting with fellow students. While I don’t currently have paid employment, I am completing a work placement as a chef at The Ville, which provides valuable industry experience. This has been a rewarding opportunity to learn and grow professionally.
