STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Some of my favourite moments in Townsville, making student life more enjoyable

Kingsley from Nigeria, one of our 2025 Student Ambassadors shares some of the simple and easily accessible locations and areas of Townsville he has visited. As an international student studying in Townsville, North Queensland, there are lots of places to see and things to do beyond the lecture theatre and classroom. Kingsley is studying a Master of Social Work at @James Cook University in Townsville.

Beyond the tours, islands, and museums, some of my favourite moments in Townsville have been the simple ones that make student life enjoyable. Between study sessions and ambassador events, I found time to unwind and explore the city’s local highlights.

One of my go-to spots is The Strand — Townsville’s iconic waterfront promenade. Whether walking with friends, watching the sunset, or just enjoying the ocean breeze, The Strand always feels refreshing. The palm-lined path stretches for about 2.2 kilometres with cafés, playgrounds, and swimming areas along the way. Some evenings, I’d grab an ice cream and sit by the water just to relax and take in the view of Magnetic Island. It’s the perfect reminder of why Townsville feels both vibrant and peaceful.

Another great experience was hiking Castle Hill. It’s hard to miss this pink granite landmark rising in the centre of the city. The climb can be a bit steep, but the panoramic view from the top makes it worth every step. From there, you can see the city below, Magnetic Island offshore, and the surrounding ranges — a sight that never gets old. Many locals hike it at sunrise or sunset, and joining them felt like becoming part of the Townsville rhythm.

For something more light-hearted, I enjoyed a few evenings at Kingpin Townsville, the bowling and entertainment centre. It’s a fun place to hang out with friends, bowl a few rounds, and take a break from assignments. The atmosphere is lively, and it’s one of those easy spots that bring students together.

These small, everyday adventures — a walk, a hike, a game — made my time in Townsville more than just an academic journey. They’re reminders that regional student life here balances study with community, nature, and simple joys.
