Perfect Place for Studying Marine Science & Marine Biology: Personal Experiences
Agus, from Indonesia, is studying a Masters of Marine Biology at @James Cook University and has been a Student Ambassador with Study Townsville in 2024 and 2025. Agus shares his experience as an international student studying marine biology in Townsville, North Queensland.
It’s no surprise that you’ll find people studying marine biology — or marine science in general — all over the city. Townsville has earned its reputation as a pivotal hub for marine science, contributing significantly to global coral-reef research.
I came here specifically to study coral reefs and related fields, enrolling in the Master of Marine Biology at James Cook University (JCU). After researching similar degrees at other Australian universities, I concluded that JCU’s program offered the unique curriculum I needed, especially the coral-reef science stream, which perfectly matched my interests.
Since starting my Master of Marine Biology, I’ve had countless opportunities to turn classroom lessons into real-world scientific experiences. The subjects are very practical, with plenty of hands-on field trips out to the Great Barrier Reef that make learning both exciting and meaningful. I also gained valuable experience volunteering with scientists at the @Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), where I learned how large-scale research projects are conducted. For my master’s thesis, I’ve been using remote-sensing technologies to map reef islands in Indonesia. An experience that has allowed me to connect my academic training to the places and ecosystems I deeply care about.
As a marine-biology student, I may be a bit biased, but for me Townsville is the perfect place to study. I love the ocean, beaches, “slow living” and vibrant city. There’s a good balance between focused study and exploring nature. Apart from marine activities, I’ve started enjoying outdoor activities like hiking, birdwatching, outdoor climbing, and swimming. Along the way, I’ve found people who share these interests and friendships that have made my time here feel even more meaningful.
Thanks to my Student Ambassador role with Study Townsville, I’ve been lucky enough to explore different parts of North Queensland’s nature. Almost every trip with Study Townsville has been an unforgettable experience. If I had to choose two favourites, staying overnight at Hidden Valley Cabins with friends while exploring the Paluma Rainforest was truly magical. Another highlight was the trip to John Brewer Reef on the Great Barrier Reef, where I enjoyed snorkelling as always seeing fascinating coral reefs, schools of reef fish, the Museum of Underwater Art, and even spotting a humpback whale and her adorable calf. I love capturing moments from these trips on social media, not only to show the world how beautiful Townsville is but also to preserve memories of such a wonderful time studying here.
Looking back, studying in Townsville has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s a place where I can grow academically, connect with nature, and meet inspiring people from around the world. For anyone passionate about the ocean, Townsville isn’t just a study destination; it’s a community and a home that inspires you to keep exploring.
