Navigating Change and Exploring Life as an International Student in Townsville
Marianne from the Philippines is one of the 2024 Study Townsville Student Ambassadors and is studying a Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery and Diploma in Hospitality Management at @Axial Training and International College in Townsville.
Moving to a new country, leaving behind my friends, family, and the comforts of a familiar life, was the biggest and hardest decision I’ve ever made. It wasn’t just life-changing, it completely transformed my views and perspectives. When I first thought about studying abroad, Townsville wasn’t even on my radar, and the idea of pursuing a course in Commercial Cookery was something I never imagined.
As a Behavioural Science graduate from the Philippines, stepping into a completely new environment and diving into an entirely different field was both daunting and exciting. But looking back now, I can confidently say it’s a decision I’ll never regret. Townsville has become so much more than just a city — it’s a place where I’ve grown, explored, and created unforgettable memories. And studying Commercial Cookery? It has taught me far more than just the art of cooking; it’s instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and the courage to embrace the unknown.
Like most international students, my first few weeks in Townsville were a mix of excitement and homesickness. Adjusting to a new culture and education system has its own difficulties, but the city’s welcoming vibe made it easier. Growing up, I was confident in my English-speaking skills, but interacting with Australians introduced me to a whole new challenge: the accent. I never realized how different Australian English was from the American English I was familiar with. At first, conversations felt like decoding a puzzle, but over time, I adapted. Aussies are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet, and their casual, easy-going nature helped me settle in. Everyday interactions—whether chatting with strangers in line at the grocery store or striking up conversations at work—helped me become more confident. What once felt intimidating soon became one of the most enjoyable parts of my day.
Making friends, however, was harder than I expected. Even though there were other Filipinos in my class, I found it difficult to truly connect at first. Maybe it was the longing for my old friends back home. But with time, I opened up and was grateful to be part of Study Townsville’s STAR Student Ambassador Program. This experience allowed me to meet new people and explore Townsville’s vibrant culture and exciting activities.
Through the program, I had the chance to go whale-watching, an awe-inspiring experience where I marvelled at these majestic creatures. I also attended the North Australian Festival of Arts, enjoying incredible performances ranging from circus acts to cabaret shows. Beyond Townsville, we visited Charters Towers, a historic town where I was captivated by the sight of stunning longhorn cattle amidst breath-taking scenery.
These adventures wouldn’t have been possible without Study Townsville, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities they provided. Their support made my journey as a STAR Student Ambassador not just enjoyable but deeply enriching.
Living here has taught me independence, adaptability, and an appreciation for new experiences. Townsville may not be a bustling metropolis, but its unique charm, close-knit community, and stunning natural beauty make it perfect for students. If you’re considering studying abroad, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ll never know how much you’ll grow until you take that leap.
