More than Just a Degree: How Townsville Shaped Me
Glynnis from Malaysia is studying a Bachelor of Business and Environmental Science at @James Cook University in Townsville and is one of the 2025 Study Townsville Student Ambassadors.
Studying at James Cook University in Townsville has been a transformative experience that has helped me connect my academic journey with real-world career opportunities. Through placements, I have gained hands-on insight into what my degree in Business and Environmental Science, majoring in Aquaculture is truly about. These experiences have given me clarity and confidence in pursuing a career in sustainable aquaculture and environmental consultancy.
Coming straight from high school to a new country with no family companion was a daunting experience at first. However, over time I have built strong connections and met wonderful, talented, and inspiring people. They have illuminated my university experience, helped me grow, and shaped me into a more open-minded individual. Spending time here has allowed me to understand myself better and feel truly part of a community.
During my studies, I have volunteered in a range of exciting projects, from barramundi eDNA sampling to algae and black tiger prawn internship, fish identification, and eco-tourism initiatives. Each one has deepened my understanding of marine ecosystems and allowed me to work alongside passionate researchers and industry professionals.
I chose Townsville not just for its academic strengths, but for its lifestyle. Having the Great Barrier Reef in our backyard is a luxury few students get to enjoy. Townsville offers a rare balance: a vibrant university community, access to world-class nature, and a relaxed pace of life where I do not need to wake up early to battle traffic. The diversity of friendships I have made here has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.
Many people arrive in Townsville and feel there is not much to do, but if you take a closer look, the city is full of life. From hiking trails and reef trips to art exhibitions and local festivals, there is something for everyone. You just have to be open to exploring.
As an international student living in university dorms, I have found it easy to build connections. The dorm environment fosters community, and there is always something happening, whether it is social events, study sessions, or spontaneous chats in the common room. My advice to future students is to say yes ! to opportunities, get involved, and do not be afraid to reach out.
I also work part-time in hospitality, retail, and education, which has helped me build resilience, communication skills, and a deeper connection to the local community. Employers have been welcoming and supportive, and I felt genuinely valued.
As a Study Townsville student ambassador, I have had the privilege of sharing my journey here in Townsville, representing the vibrant student voice. It has been a highlight of my year, filled with meaningful conversation, lasting friendships, and unforgettable memories.
