Lessons go beyond the classroom, allowing me to explore a broader learning perspective
Benlito, from the Philippines, is studying a Diploma of Business with Axial International College @axial.international in Townsville. Benlito shares with us the paths he has taken to study, live and work in Townsville, Australia and his experience as an international student here.
ME BEFORE MY JOURNEY:
I wanted to share my international student journey with you, as it’s been quite an adventure here in the lovely tropical city of Townsville. My decision to come to Australia wasn’t really planned; it felt more like destiny calling.
Before I delve into my adventures here, let me give you a bit of backstory. Unlike most international students who come to Australia seeking better career opportunities and a new life, mine was more of a semi-retirement move. I had a long career behind me in Business Administration, working with some of the world’s biggest companies like Linde Engineering, Arcelor-Mittal, and Air Products and Chemicals. Despite my stellar performances, I always found myself getting side-tracked for permanent positions because I lacked a diploma or a degree to back up my knowledge and experience.
I’ve always been a strong advocate for education, supporting my two younger sisters, three nieces, and two nephews in their university studies. However, fate has its way of making us realize what we’re missing. At the beginning of 2023, I was dismissed from my job as a Lead Administrator due to my lack of formal education. Although it was a tough pill to swallow, I believe everything happens for a reason, and this was my wake-up call.
THE TURNING POINT:
When I got released from my last job, I called my sister in Townsville and asked if there were any colleges or universities in the area. She mentioned Axial International College, James Cook University, and Central Queensland University.
That was enough for me to gather my documents, apply for a visa, and travel to Australia. Before I knew it, I was taking classes at Axial International College, pursuing a Diploma of Business.
THE JOURNEY:
My academic journey in Townsville has been nothing short of exciting. I never expected learning to be this fun! While my daily routine mainly revolves around college studies, work, and home life, it’s far from boring. Townsville offers a diverse range of activities. I had the amazing experience of seeing one of the world’s biggest pop divas, PINK, perform live at Queensland Country Bank Stadium Townsville in February 2024. The NTI Townsville Supercar event was another thrilling event for me. Townsville truly lives up to its reputation as the Events Capital of the North.
The city’s biodiversity is a highlight for nature lovers like me. Castle Hill is a gem, offering both fitness and nature in one activity. Trekking up the hill provides a stunning 360-degree view of the city. The Strand, with its rich marine life, is perfect for on-shore fishing. Magnetic Island, just a 30-minute ferry ride away, offers incredible nature adventures.
Living in Townsville is relaxing and fun, especially for those looking to raise a family. With its family-friendly nature, open spaces, parks, and playgrounds, Townsville stands out among the cities I’ve lived in around the world.
STUDENT LIFE AND MORE:
Balancing student life, work, and personal life can be stressful, but I’ve learned to maintain balance and enjoy the journey. Finding work as a student in Townsville has been a breeze, with plenty of opportunities in retail, hospitality, and food services. The key to enjoying student life is finding activities you love and being part of an organization that values your contributions. My work experience here has been smooth, and I’ve had the chance to explore the hospitality industry, which is new to me.
The hospitality and food service industry is one of the biggest employers in Townsville, making it an ideal place for those looking to start a career in this field. The equal opportunities and protective legislations in Australia are something I truly appreciate, having worked in different countries.
The quality of education and the mode of learning here are fantastic. I love that my lessons go beyond the classroom, allowing me to explore a broader learning perspective.
TIPS AND ADVICE FOR ASPIRING STUDENTS OUT THERE:
For aspiring students, it’s essential to know your objectives and passions. Education shouldn’t be seen as just a stepping stone to a greener pasture. Choose a field of study that aligns with your interests and passion, as this will define the armour you’ll wield in your future endeavours. Don’t rely solely on advice from agents or consultants; make sure your chosen course is something you’ll enjoy and excel in.
I hope my journey inspires you to pursue your dreams and make the most of your educational experience.
