It all starts with a leap into the unknown

Perla from Mexico is one of the 2024 Study Townsville Student Ambassadors and is studying a Diploma in Business at @Axial Training and International College in Townsville. Perla shares with us how a decision to come to Australia is shaping the path to her career aspirations.

When I first came to Australia it was to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, at that point in my life, I was feeling lots of pressure and so lost and behind everyone else, I decided to come to improve my English and then go back home to start University. However, as time passed I started realising how Australia changed my whole perspective of life in 6 months, being able to leave my comfort zone and step outside of all the things I knew from my entire life was what made me discover myself.

I started working in hospitality back home, but being able to work in this industry in Australia made me realise it was truly what I wanted to do, it resonates with my core values of kindness, service and community. I had the opportunity to work at the Intercontinental Hotel Perth, one memorable experience I will always treasure, being able to create lasting memories for other people and seeing the joy and gratitude on their faces makes all the hard work worthwhile. I have learned invaluable skills such as effective communication, problem-solving and the ability to multitask under pressure, the experiences I have had within the industry have helped me grow personally and professionally, they showed me how capable I am of doing things I never thought of doing.

One year ago I moved from Perth to Townsville with the focus on developing my professional and personal career from scratch, starting with a Diploma in Business at Axial International College. This year Townsville has shown me how unique it is, the blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture makes it a fantastic place to work in hospitality and to focus on my self-discovery journey, there´s always something exciting happening, being part of such a dynamic environment has enriched my work experience and allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life.

The lessons I have learned, the people I have met and the experiences I have had in Townsville have all played a significant role in shaping my career and in showing me the real value of life.
