From Bangkok to Townsville: A Marine Biologist’s Journey of Discovery
Supatcha (PJ) from Thailand completed a Masters in Marine Biology at @James Cook University in November 2024 and shares her experiences as an international student in Townsville. In 2024 PJ was a Student Ambassador with Study Townsville.
From Bangkok to Townsville: A Marine Biologist’s Journey of Discovery
Hi everyone! I’m Supatcha Japakang, but most people call me PJ or Ploy. As a marine science graduate who just completed my master’s in marine biology at James Cook University (JCU), I want to share my incredible journey of transformation from a big city in Thailand to the stunning coastal world of Townsville, Australia.
My Background: A City Girl Meets Marine Science
Coming from bustling Bangkok, I never imagined how profoundly my life would change when I decided to pursue my dream of studying marine biology. Townsville wasn’t just a destination – it became my gateway to understanding and loving nature in ways I never thought possible.
Falling in Love with Townsville: A Natural Paradise
When I first arrived, adjusting was challenging. The pace, the landscape, and the lifestyle were completely different from what I knew. But soon, Townsville worked its magic on me. This place is nothing short of extraordinary!
Imagine a location where:
– You can go hiking and reach a mountain summit in just 20 minutes
– A short 20-minute ferry ride takes you to islands where you can witness mesmerizing coral spawning underwater
– Numerous creeks invite you to explore and take a refreshing swim
– Wildlife is everywhere, waiting to be discovered – no zoo ticket required
Townsville doesn’t just show you nature; it embraces you with it. I felt like I was being “hugged by nature” in the most literal sense.
Academic Experiences at James Cook University
JCU isn’t just an institution; it’s a launchpad for hands-on learning. My classes consistently offered field trips that transformed theoretical knowledge into real-world experiences. One of the most significant was my research at Orpheus Island Research Station, where I conducted my thesis.
As an international student studying abroad for the first time, I was overwhelmed by the incredible support from JCU. The staff, systems, and professors provided comprehensive assistance – not just academically, but also mentally and financially.
A Dream Realized: Volunteering at AIMS
A highlight of my journey was volunteering at the @Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Townsville. This had been on my bucket list for years, and the experience exceeded all expectations. For a long time, I had worked on understanding coral spawning in the wild. But at AIMS, I got an extraordinary opportunity to observe coral spawning ex-situ—literally bringing corals out of the ocean to witness their reproductive process. This hands-on experience didn’t just add to my research; it reignited and fuelled my passion for coral conservation.
Advice for Future International Students
Townsville is a hidden gem with a unique lifestyle that takes time to appreciate. My advice? Be patient with yourself. The adjustment period might feel challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. For students considering studying in Townsville, especially those from big cities or different cultural backgrounds:
– Embrace the unfamiliar
– Be open to new experiences
– Give yourself time to adapt
– Explore the incredible natural environment around you
Final Thoughts
My journey from Bangkok to Townsville has been transformative. What started as a master’s degree became a profound personal and professional metamorphosis. Townsville didn’t just teach me marine biology—it showed me a new way of connecting with the world around me.
To my fellow aspiring marine biologists and international students: Your adventure might look different, but the potential for discovery is limitless.
