Embracing the Townsville Experience

Emmanuel from Ghana, studying a PhD in Health at James Cook University (JCU), Townsville campus.

A vibrant city in Northern Queensland, more than just a place of education; It offers a 360 experience! Welcome to Townsville mate!

Ranging from the stunning natural beauty of the region to the presence of a diverse international student community, which made me feel like I could truly belong here, I certainly could not have passed on this chance of having a first-hand experience.

One of the many highlights of my experience in Townsville has been the opportunity to explore the region’s breath-taking landscapes. My awe-inspiring view from Castle Hill and cruise episode on the crystal-clear waters while whale watching will forever be etched in my mind. The city’s lively cultural scene with its festivals and events have been great avenues to meet and interact with locals, forming lasting relationships and networks.

As a proud student of JCU, which is renowned for its exceptional academic environment and vibrant social community, serving as an International Student Mentor has opened doors for me to connect with both my fellow students and various student organizations. This has been rewarding, giving me a sense of fulfilment and contributing to my personal growth.

My time in Townsville has been more than just academic; it has provided me with valuable career insights. Networking with industry professionals at events on and off campus has given me a real-world perspective on my field of study. These experiences have undoubtedly strengthened my resume and expanded my career prospects.

Developing a social life in Townsville is easy, thanks to its friendly residents and vibrant student community. Joining clubs and organizations related to your interests is a great way to meet like-minded people. Attending local events and festivals is another way to connect with both locals and fellow students. I have built valuable relationships from attending horse racing events, food festivals and many others. Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations and build lasting friendships.

To future students considering Townsville, I would advise embracing every opportunity that comes your way. Engage with your professors, fellow students, and the local community. Be open to new experiences, whether it’s trying out your local bar, restaurants or exploring the region’s natural wonders. Your time in Townsville can be as enriching as you make it and I can assure you, it will be a journey of a lifetime.
