STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Discovering Townsville: My Student Journey

Introducing Karabo, from Botswana, who is studying a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor or Surgery at @James Cook University in Townsville. Karabo is one of the 2025 Study Townsville Student Ambassadors and shares what her first year of study has been like in Townsville, North Queensland.

Choosing to study in Townsville was an easy decision for me. Coming from a Southern African, country, Botswana, I love warm, tropical weather, and Townsville’s climate felt familiar and inviting. Beyond the weather, the city’s natural beauty immediately captured my attention. I was thrilled to discover that the beach was so close to the university, a perfect spot to relax after studying. I also appreciated that Townsville is a city that isn’t overwhelming or crowded, offering a balance of modern amenities, clean air, and a relaxed lifestyle. Combined with the opportunity to study at a great university, Townsville felt like the perfect choice.

The highlights of my experience here have been countless. Going to the beach for the first time in my life was unforgettable. Attending a race car show was equally thrilling, but the most remarkable experience was visiting Charters Towers’ Leahton Park, to see Texas Longhorn cattle. Coming from Botswana, where livestock is an important part of life, seeing these magnificent cattle with record-breaking horn length was fascinating. The owners were incredibly kind, sharing the history of the cattle and taking us on a tour. Experiencing this with friends, while making new connections, reminded me of home yet showed me a world full of new possibilities.

Living in Townsville has also greatly enriched my growth on my chosen career path of becoming a physician. Interacting with people from diverse cultures and communities has taught me the importance of being open-minded, culturally aware, and respectful qualities that are essential in healthcare. I’ve learned how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life and provide care that honours their backgrounds and beliefs.

Although I haven’t undertaken formal projects with employers, I have been actively involved as a student ambassador with Study Townsville. This role has allowed me to explore the city, attend local events, and bring friends along to share these experiences. Meeting international students from Thailand, India, and Singapore has expanded my social circle and created unforgettable memories.

For future students considering Townsville, I would advise embracing all the city has to offer. Take time to explore its natural beauty, get involved in community events, and build a support network with classmates and fellow students. Staying in shared accommodation can make it easier to meet new people, while the welcoming atmosphere of the city allows friendships to flourish naturally. Employment opportunities are plentiful, especially in retail, offering part-time or casual work alongside your studies.

Overall, my first year in Townsville has been incredible. From exploring beautiful landscapes to forming lasting friendships, the city has offered me both personal and academic growth. Study Townsville has been central to this experience, providing amazing opportunities to discover the city, connect with other students, and create unforgettable memories. It has been the perfect doorway into life in Australia, and I look forward to making even more memories in this vibrant, welcoming city.
