STUDENT EXPERIENCE

From Indonesia to Townsville: My Journey Beneath the Reef and Beyond the Outback

Tio, from Indonesia, is studying a Masters of Marine Biology at James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville, and shares his experience as a Study Townsville Student Ambassador.

My name is Tio, and I am originally from Indonesia. Before moving to Australia, I began my journey with the ocean as a diving instructor in Indonesia, where I learned not only how to explore the underwater world, but also how to appreciate and protect it. That experience shaped my passion for marine life and opened a path I never imagined I would take. Today, I am grateful to be studying Marine Biology at James Cook University in Townsville, while also serving as a Study Townsville Student Ambassador. Over the past year, this role has given me an unforgettable opportunity to explore the Townsville region through exciting events, meaningful connections, and adventures that stretch from the Great Barrier Reef to inland Australia.

One of the most exciting parts of being an ambassador has been the chance to experience Townsville through well-organised and inspiring events. Each event introduced me to a new side of the city and the region. Townsville feels vibrant and full of opportunities, yet still peaceful and connected to nature. These experiences helped me realise that Townsville is not only a place to study, but a place where you can build a life, grow your confidence, and feel part of a welcoming community.

Another highlight has been meeting and building connections with fellow ambassadors. Coming from different backgrounds and study areas, we shared stories, supported each other, and learned together. The friendships I have built through this program have been one of the most valuable parts of my journey. It made me feel that even though I am far from home, I am not alone. Townsville has a strong sense of community, and that is something many students hope to find when they move to a new country.

As a Marine Biology student, one of the most meaningful experiences has been seeing the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef with my own eyes. For someone who has spent years diving in Indonesia, witnessing the reef in Australia felt special and inspiring. It reminded me why I chose this path and strengthened my motivation to keep learning, researching, and contributing to marine conservation in the future. Studying in Townsville has allowed me to connect my academic journey with real ecosystems that are globally important.

My favourite memories also include travelling beyond the coastline and experiencing inland Australia. Visiting Texas Longhorn Tours (Charters Towers) was one of the most unique moments for me. Seeing the cattle up close and feeling the calm atmosphere of the inland environment was a completely different experience from the ocean world I was used to. I also had the chance to visit Charters Towers, where I enjoyed stunning landscapes and beautiful views that showed me how diverse North Queensland really is. From the reef to the outback, the contrast is incredible, and it makes the region feel rich with stories and culture.

Overall, I feel proud to represent Townsville as a Study Townsville Student Ambassador. This past year has been a journey of growth, discovery, and gratitude. From my beginnings as a diving instructor in Indonesia, to studying Marine Biology at JCU, to exploring the Great Barrier Reef and travelling through inland Australia, Townsville has given me experiences that I will carry for life. I hope more students and travellers will discover the unique charm of this region, and I am honoured to share my story and help showcase why Townsville is a destination worth exploring.
