Growing, Learning, and Belonging: My Townsville Experience as a Nursing Student
Rupanshi, from India is studying a Bachelor of Nursing Science at @James Cook University in Townsville and has shared with us how her experience in Townsville is helping with her desired career path.
I came to Townsville earlier this year with the intention of hustling and building my life from scratch independently. I didn’t realize at the time that this place offers incredible support and student-friendly experiences that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
I decided to enrol in the Bachelor of Nursing Science program at James Cook University. From the very beginning, I was amazed by how supportive and welcoming the university and local community were. That sense of belonging made me confident that I had chosen the right path, not just in my studies, but in choosing Townsville.
One of the first things that inspired me about Townsville was its natural beauty and calming atmosphere. The incredible views from Castle Hill Lookout and the peaceful walks along The Strand have become my go-to spots whenever I need to recharge. These moments of reflection remind me why I chose nursing — to care for others, stay grounded, and appreciate life’s simple but powerful moments.
Beyond the scenery, what truly stands out about Townsville is its strong sense of community. The people here are warm, supportive, and always willing to help. Programs like the LearnIT initiative by Queensland Youth Services, which assists young people in gaining confidence behind the wheel, and countless volunteer opportunities across the city have shown me the importance of giving back — a value that’s essential in nursing. These experiences have strengthened my empathy, patience, and understanding of what it means to serve a community.
Becoming a Study Townsville Ambassador has been one of the highlights of my journey. This role has allowed me to connect with students from different backgrounds, engage with local organizations, and represent a city that continues to support and inspire me. Through various events and activities, I’ve discovered hidden gems around Townsville and gained a deeper understanding of the local culture that I know will help me relate better to people from all walks of life in my future nursing career.
Living in Townsville has been more than just studying and settling into a new place; it’s been about learning life skills that directly align with my professional goals. The sense of community, diversity, and support here has helped me develop qualities like compassion, resilience, and adaptability, all of which are essential in healthcare.
As I continue my Bachelor of Nursing Science and my ambassador journey, I feel more confident than ever that Townsville is helping me grow into the nurse I aspire to be. This city has taught me to care deeply, connect meaningfully, and never stop learning.
Townsville isn’t just where I study — it’s where I’m becoming the person and professional I’ve always wanted to be.
