Finding Social Life in Townsville as an International Student

Ahana from India, is studying a Master of Science (Professional) in Tropical Biology and Conservation at James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville. While originally from India Ahana has also spent time in the USA and shares how she has found social circles and friendly connections as an international student in Townsville.

Moving to a new country is a thrilling adventure, but it also comes with its challenges—especially when it comes to finding a social circle that feels like home. My first few months in Townsville were all about navigating new experiences, people, and places. Over time, I realized the key to building a fulfilling social life here lies in being open to different activities and finding common ground with people who share your interests—even if they’re in separate circles.

One of the first places I found my footing was at James Cook University (JCU). My classmates became my initial social anchor, and we quickly bonded over group projects, shared struggles, and plenty of laughs in between. The campus itself is buzzing with opportunities to meet people—social events, cultural nights, and casual coffee meetups are just the beginning.

But life in Townsville isn’t confined to the campus, and neither was my social life. I discovered that the city has so much to offer for connecting with people beyond academics. For instance, I love running, and Townsville turned out to be a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. The Ross River parklands near JCU are perfect for a peaceful run, and The Strand, with its stunning ocean views, is nothing short of magical. Joining running clubs like the Craft Run club not only fueled my love for running but also became a gateway to making friends who share my passion for fitness and exploration. Each Thursday, we’d run through different parts of the city, ending at a new pub or restaurant. It’s like blending exercise with a mini food tour—fun and fulfilling at the same time!

Of course, social life isn’t just about being on the move. Sometimes, it’s about slowing down and enjoying good food with good company. One of my favorite ways to connect with friends is through potlucks. There’s something heartwarming about everyone bringing a dish that represents a part of their culture or personality. Whether it’s spicy curries, fresh salads, or indulgent desserts, potlucks always feel like a cozy celebration of diversity and friendship. Townsville also has markets on Sundays which is always fun to explore with great company!

For nights out, Townsville’s restaurant scene doesn’t disappoint. From beachfront cafes to hidden gems serving local cuisine, going out to eat has become a favorite activity with my friends. Whether we’re digging into seafood by the ocean after a dip, or trying to eat ramen with chopsticks for the first time, the food is always better when shared with great company.

Another surprising way I’ve connected with people here is through birdwatching. Townsville’s natural beauty makes it an ideal spot for this calming hobby. I love going bird watching with my friends and we share cool places we could go to to find birds! There’s something truly special about standing quietly in nature, sharing binoculars, and getting excited over spotting a rare species together.

It is always intimidating moving to a new country, especially as an international student. But being students also gives us an advantage to ask alumni for their opinions and advice and have a student community ready for us when we come here, ready to support us. We talk about missing home and finding a community here is very important for our success.
